Today's post is meant to be a source of inspiration for our (and your) looks this week (and always). We are sharing the style of famous rockstars, and some of these women have been around for a long time. Get ready for a lot of black, sex-appeal, and a lot of 90s styles. Shirley Manson is the front-lady of 90s sensation band Garbage. Her signature looks seems to include an absurd amount of black and white, and a touch of red here and there. But with this fantastic red hair, why would she need anything else, no? I've been a big fan since my teen years, and I can see how her style sort of shaped mine today. Of course I'd love to have that hair too, but a girl can't have it all, can she? Well, unless that girl is Shirley Manson. (Anita)

Shirley Manson é a cantora da banda que foi muito badalada nos anos 90, o Garbage. Preto e branco são as cores predominantes nos looks dela, mas com um pouquinho de vermelho aqui e ali. Se bem que, com esse cabelo ruivo maravilhoso, ela nem precisa de mais cor. Eu sou fã dela desde minha adolescência, e eu acho que eu me inspiro muito nela para compor o meu estilo, quer dizer, tirando o cabelo ruivo. Mas uma garota não pode ter tudo, pode? Nina Persson is the front-lady of Swedish band Cardigans, you know, the ones with that absurdly catchy tune "Lovefool" that you'll be singing in your head for the rest of today. Nina seems to have a penchant for romantic and sweet looking clothes, but at the same time with a little edge throw in for good measure, like a leather jacket, or a destroyed t-shirt. (Anita)

A Nina Persson é a cantora da banda sueca Cardigans, aquela que ficou muito famosa por causa da musica "Lovefool" da trilha do filme Romeu e Julieta. A Nina parece preferir roupas em estilo bem romântico e fofo, mas ao mesmo tempo ela joga uma jaqueta de couro ou uma camiseta podrinha e bastante preto para mostrar que ainda é rock'n'roll. Let's give Courtney Love a round of applause for finally getting a hang on her style. That 90s coke-user look was not doing her any favors, but lately, the Cobain widow (or killer, depending on which conspiracy theory you subscribe to) is sporting some very nice looks. She is sexy and grown-up, and even (believe it!) ladylike. (Anita)

The Cramberries were one of my favourite bands in the 90's and Dolores got famous for her strong and unique voice. I have to say that her style was purely 90's, and lately she got better at fashion, but I think she still has a long way to go.  (Vica)

Karen Elson is better known for her relationship to Jack White of The White Strips, but she's also a model and a singer-songwriter that has a beautiful voice and a beautiful style. Also, she's got this gorgeous copper hair, which is the perfect hair for a rock singer, in my opinion.  (Vica)

Tina Turner doesn't need introductions. She's a total diva. Always have, always will. Her style maybe crazy, but it's totally rock 'n' roll!  (Vica)

Björk is my favourite singer/songwriter of all time. I absolutely love her. She's so unique and incomparable! Also is her fashion style! Although most of what she wears is rather crazy or way too "modern" for the regular girl, there are certain looks that can be really inspiring, as you can use the color combinations and also hair styles to come up with your own look.  (Vica)

Björk é a minha cantora/compositora favorita de todos os tempos. Eu absolutamente amo ela. Ela é tão única e incomparável! E também seu estilo! Apesar de quase tudo que ela usa ser meio maluco ou "moderno" demais pra garotas comuns, existem alguns looks que podem ser inspiradoras, já que se pode aproveitar as combinações de cores e também alguns penteados para se criar um look próprio. To wrap this post up, we rescued Linda Perry from the 90's! She was the lead singer for the band 4 Non Blondes, which I liked a lot. I think she has a real rock singer style, still kinda grunge but also cool in a very usable way. (Vica)

O momento da proposta: uma tarde qualquer de trabalho, via bate-papo Gmail, minha amiga Vica, ex colega de trabalho e uma das incentivadoras a me libertar das roupas e combinações que uma virginiana costuma usar (sapato, blusa, saia, acessórios e bolsa = tudo da mesma cor!) me comenta da nova investida para 2012: UM ANO SEM COMPRAR ROUPA!

O resultado/consequência: um susto, mas adorei a idéia e, de cara falei: eu topo!

Óbvio dos óbvios que somente após algumas horas é que me dei conta que essa não seria uma missão muito fácil e tranquila de se cumprir, mas, palavra é palavra, trato é trato e cá estou eu, de férias em Florianópolis e pensando em como será o meu ano de 2012 sem comprar nada de roupas, eu repito: nadica!

Confesso que ainda não me aprofundei em todas as exceções às regras de compra e, para evitar qualquer fraude ao projeto, me mantenho na linha mais severa: a de que não posso adquirir nada a partir do primeiro segundo de 2012, ou seja, somente com a leitura atenta de todos os documentos já formulados pelas minhas blogueiras muito mais assíduas do que eu, é que irei me permitir a aquisição dos "itens necessários e fundamentais para a sobrevivência de uma mulher"... hehehehe...

Outra razão do meu "mantra" atual ser o NADA é que ainda não concluí o inventário de roupas que tenho. Sim, não tive tempo, por diversos e diversos fatores: casamento, mudança, um cachorro manhoso e férias! Mas....os primeiros itens anotados já me levaram a ter a absoluta certeza de que tenho muita, mas muita roupa! Um bom exemplo: tenho 6 regatinhas básicas brancas! Que pessoa com 1,50 de altura precisa de tantas regatas brancas??? rsrsrrss....

De qualquer forma, já tenho ciência de que algumas peças de roupa me faltam e foi assim que numa passada nas Lojas Marisa para a compra de uma calcinha nova para a entrada do ano novo, é que comprei uma camisa branca. Segundo a etiqueta na camisa, o item é "moda praia", mas já que o intuito é ousar e reutilizar peças, já estou pensando o quanto ela vai ficar show com um cinto colorido ou uma manta transada ou com um colar (que para as que me conhecem, provavelmente "roubado" da vó - prometo que comento em algum post a relação: eu + vó + moda):

Ufaaa! Muitas informações para um primeiro post, mas espero e prometo tentar ter mais foco nos próximos e vir com um assunto único definido!

How did I ended up vowing not to buy clothes for a year? An afternoon at work when, via Gmail chat, my friend Vica, former colleague and one of the people that inspired me to free myself from the clothing combinations that a Virgo often falls prey to (shoes, blouse, skirt, bag and accessories = all in the same color palette!), talks to me about a new challenge for 2012:  A YEAR WITHOUT BUYING CLOTHES!


The outcome / result: I got scared, but I loved the idea, so I said: I'm in!


Of course only a few hours after that, I realized that this was not an easy task to accomplish, but I gave my word, and a deal is a deal, so here I am on vacation in Florianopolis and thinking about how will I go a year without buying for any clothing items, and I stress the point: NOTHING!


I confess that I have not looked carefully into all the rules and exceptions of this challenge, so to avoid any wrongdoing to the project, I'll keep a more severe stance: that I will not shop for anything starting the first second of 2012. Maybe after reading all the rules and exceptions already laid out by my fellow Occupy bloggers that are much more diligent than I am, then I will allow myself the acquisition of "necessary basic items for the survival of a woman" ...  hehehehe...


Another reason for my current "mantra" to be NOTHING is that I haven't yet completed the inventory of the clothing I have. Yes, I've had no time due to several different factors: my wedding, moving to another apartment, a sly dog ​​and holidays! But...  the first items I took note of already led me to be absolutely sure I have way too many clothes! A good example: I have 6 basic white tank tops! What 1.5mt (4'11") tall woman needs that many white tank tops? lol

Anyway, as I am aware that I am missing some items of clothing, I stopped by a Marisa store to buy new underwear for new year's eve, I also got a white shirt. According to the label on the shirt, the item is "beachwear", but since the intent is to dare and to reuse parts, I'm wondering how cool it will look with a colorful belt or with a scarf or with a necklace (for those who know me, probably a necklace"stolen" from my grandmother - I promise that I'll comment on a later post about the relationship: me + granny + fashion).


Gosh! Too much information for a first post, but I hope and promise to try to have more focus in the next ones!

Desafio/Challenge: Anthropologie

Momento da verdade: eu adoro a loja Anthropologie, assino o catálogo e o newsletter, e estou sempre devorando as vitrines que eles inventam. Mas o estilo da loja per se, não me identifico muito. É bem vintage-inspired com peças caríssimas e em cortes que nem sempre ficam muito legais em mim. Mas não adianta, mesmo assim estou sempre passeando pelo site e pela loja, na esperança de que um dia eu vá encontrar algo que vai ficar lindo em mim (e caber no orçamento). Isso aconteceu na minha última ida ao shopping, encontrei uma saia longa vermelha que é a MINHA cara e saiu super baratinha. Como tinha falado da saia e da loja naquele post, a Vica foi lá e clicou e se apaixonou pela loja (mal ae, Vica!). E esse vestido verde chamou a atenção dela. Eu pra ser sincera não tinha achado lá tão empolgante, mas olhei pela segunda vez quando ela disse que tinha amado o vestido. E olhando com calma pensei: eu acho que consigo recriar esse look só com o que já tenho no armário.

Confession time: I love Anthropologie, I subscribe to their catalogues and email newsletters, and I'm always drooling over their windows creations. But their vintage-inspired style is not really my type, besides being super unaffordable. No matter, I still spend considerable amount of time in their physical and online stores, admiring their latest creations and hoping to find something that will look good on me (and on my wallet). That actually happened last time I went shopping, when I found a red maxi skirt that was very me. Since I talked about Anthropologie in that post, Vica went to check out Anthropologie and fell in love with that green dress on the top of this post. I didn't really think it was that impressive the first time I saw it, but since she was excited about it, I decided to give it a second look. And when I did that I realized that I could easily (kind of) recreate that outfit with what I already had in my wardrobe. 

O meu preferido foi o look da direita, não imaginei que ficaria tão legal. Vou usar certo para trabalhar assim que as minhas férias de final de ano acabarem! O look da esquerda eu achei divertida a combinação de cores, mas não sei se usaria isso pra sair na rua.

And you know what, in the end I really liked the combinations. The one in the right was my favorite, I'll definitely wear it to work one of these days. I thought the color combination in the left look was fun, but I don't think you'll see me wearing that out there in the wild. 

A peça principal eu tinha: um vestido de cintura baixa mais ou menos parecido com esse que comprei na ASOS um tempo atrás, só que sem mangas e azulão. Para o look "noite" eu adicionei uma blusa por baixo do vestido para recriar as mangas do vestido da Anthropologie.

The main item I had: a similar drop-waist dress I bought from ASOS quite a while ago, except mine is sleeveless and royal blue. For the "night" look, I added a blouse under the dress to recreate the sleeves of the original dress.

Já que usei o que tinha no armário, me custou US$0! Muito melhor, não?

Thankfully, I had similar things in my wardrobe, so I spent a total of $0 dollars to recreate this look. Much better. 

Últimas Compras do Ano / Last Shopping Haul of the year!

Aproveitei as super promoções do pós Natal aqui na minha cidade, mais uns créditos que tinha na Forever 21 que queria torrar antes de 2012 começar assim eu não caia na tentação. Olha, gastando pouquissimo consegui adicionar vários básicos (e uma ou outra peça mais extravagante) no meu armário. Além disso, estou incluindo os sapatos que ganhei de presente de Natal esse ano aqui nesse post, só para mostrar mais umas coisinhas novas por aqui!).

I took advantage of the post-Christmas sales here in Salt Lake, plus a few credits I had at Forever 21, to go shopping for the last time for a while. And I managed to get a lot of my necessary basics and a little extra extravagant thing-y without spending a lot. I'm also including some Christmas gifts in this post, just so I can show them off!).

Para começar, a maior pechincha de todas: saia maxi da Anthropologie por 21 dólares (preço original era US$ 158!!). Eu amo saia maxi, tenho algumas, mas nenhuma tão linda e chique quanto essa da Anthropologie. E assim também finalmente consegui ter algo da Anthropologie no meu armário (só entro naquela loja para comprar coisa pra casa, as roupas são maravilhosas, mas MUITO caras). Nem acreditei quando vi o preço final!

To get started, the best deal I got: a maxi skirt from Anthropologie that cost 21 dollars (the original price was 158!). I love maxi skirts and have a few, but none so fancy as this one. And I now finally own something from Anthropologie in my wardrobe! I usually only shop for home things there, since the clothes are gorgeous but way out of my budget. 

Outra pechincha boa foi o tudo de coisa que consegui levar da Forever 21 só com 20 dólares (okay, eu tinha um tanto de créditos também que ajudaram, a maioria das peças que eu comprei não precisei pagar). Arrematei 3 camisetas básicas e lisas que são ótimas para usar para trabalhar com uma calça ou saia mais arrumada e um blazer. Também são ótimas nesse frio para colocar por baixo dos suéteres e camisas. Também comprei uma camiseta de manga comprida de listras fininhas que eu estava procurando a tempos! Essa ficou bem boa no corpo, e o tecido parece tecido de pijama! Pra finalizar levei um lenço, um guarda chuva, uma corrente, um par de luvas bem quentinhas, meias e uma bolsa caramelo que é uma cor que eu não tinha.

Another good deal was all the stuff I got from Forever 21 (the credits helped, but still, I had to do two trips there because I couldn't use all of my credit!). I got 3 basic tees for $5 each. I love wearing them with business bottoms and a blazer. They are also great for layering in this cold. I also got a striped, long-sleeved t-shirt that I've been after for quite a while (I wanted one exactly like this one I got). I also got a little scarf, an umbrella, a necklace, a pair of fuzzy gloves, socks and a nice tan, fake-leather bag. 

A minha outra loja preferida, a Ann Taylor Loft estava com 50% de desconto em tudo, e eu aproveitei para comprar uma camiseta preta de manga comprida básica que eu não achei na Forever 21, e uma saia plissada preta que eu andava querendo desde que li o livro da Jessica Quirk do What I Wore (super bacana o livro, estou usando para me inspirar bastante).

Another one of my favorite stores, Loft, had everything for 50% off, so I got a basic black long-sleeved t-shirt that I couldn't find at Forever 21, and a black pleated skirt that I've been craving since I read Jessica Quirk's book, What I Wore (really good book, I recommend it). 

Agora, essa comprinha abaixo não trouxe do shopping, até porque essa loja não existe em Salt Lake City. Mas achei que seria uma justa homenagem ao blog "Um ano sem Zara," que uma das minhas últimas compras do ano fosse justamente na Zara. Então fui no site e procurei por umas peças mais baratas (ainda não to com essa bola toda de comprar peças lá fora de promoção) e comprei essa calça preta jeans que serve super bem (e não vou precisar fazer a barra, milagre) e essa camisa preta de estrelas (minha estampa preferida). Fiquei feliz.

Now, this two pieces I did not bring with me from the mall, since this store cannot be found in Salt Lake City anyway. But I thought it would be a nice hommage to the blog that inspired this blog, Um ano sem Zara, that one of my last purchases was from Zara. I can't really afford most of the things on that store anyway, so I looked for some good deals on their Sale section, and found this black skinny jeans and the star shirt. I was pretty happy. 

E finally, a única peça que comprei fora de promoção foi uma camisetinha básica da GAP listrada.

And finally, the only thing I paid full price was this basic striped tee from GAP. 

Mas também queria mostrar para vocês os sapatos lindos que ganhei de presente de Natal: a mãe do namorado mandou um TOMS preto gliterizado (esse sapato é febre por aqui, mas eu nunca tinha visto um que eu gostasse até esse cheio de glitter aparecer por aqui, é lindo!), e a minha amiga Ana que entende do assunto (ahem, sapatos) me presenteou com um maravilhoso sapato da MIA, uma marca bem legal de Miami. Olha só se eles não são obras de arte no pé:

I wanted to finish showing off the two beautiful shoes I got for Christmas. First this cute glitterized TOMS from my boyfriend's mom (I have never had glitterized shoes and now I am completely enthralled by those); and those work-of-art MIA heels that I got from my friend Ana. They look gorgeous on my feet, check it out:

Okay, se vocês se lembram do meu post sobre o que faltava no meu armário de acordo com o meu inventário, eu comentei que precisava de três items: camisas, calças e um salto vermelho. Além das camisetas que vocês vem ae, eu comprei mais uma camisa parecida com essa da Zara na Forever 21. E as camisetinhas básicas são também para ajudar a compor meus looks, vamos combinar né gente, eu trabalho com marketing e design, e camisa e terno não são bem o forte na minha área. Eu gosto de combinar camisetas básicas com saias, calças e blazers mais clássicos. Mas falando em calça gente, não deu. Eu tentei, eu experimentei, mas a realidade é que eu odeio calça. Resolvi aceitar e para resolver o problema comprei essa calça da Zara que é bem preta e com bota e blazer ninguém nem vai notar que não é calça social. E me rendi as saias, é o que gosto mesmo, o que me faz sentir bem e elegante, porque não aproveitar? E o sapato vermelho, no mesmo dia que escrevi aquele post comprei o sapato que usei para ilustrar o post. Chegou e é ótimo. Missão cumprida e que venha 2012!

Alright, if you read my post about the 3 items I needed to buy before the challenge started, you'll remember I said I needed: shirts, pants and red heels. So, besides the basic tees you saw above, I also got a shirt at Forever 21 similar to the one from Zara, and I deemed myself satisfied. Let's face it: I'm in a creative field and business wear tend to not be exactly required. I do have pieces that would make me fit in in any business meeting with corporate people, but on my day to day there's no place for them. I like to mix my basic tees with more classic cut skirts, blazers and pants. Speaking of pants, here's my confession: I hate them. I tried and tried pants on this few weeks, and the fact is I hate them and I won't wear them even if I have 20 in my wardrobe. So I decided the number I had was enough and instead got the super black skinny jeans from Zara that worn with a Blazer, a nice shirt and boots, will look business-y enough. And then I invested in that pleated black skirt from Loft, and together with my extensive collection of skirts (including three very respectable pencil skirts in neutral colors) I am ready to rock the work wear. And the red heels? That same day I wrote that post I got the ones from BCBG I pictured in the post. They are gorgeous. Mission accomplished, 2012 here we come!

Uma questão de estilo / A question of style

Um ano sem comprar roupas. Socorro, e agora? Desde que aceitei o desafio, não paro de pensar em qual a melhor estratégia. Investir nos acessórios? Mas eles também estão na lista dos objetos não-compráveis. Trocar roupas no brechó todos os meses? Mas no brechó se troca mais por menos e, assim, eu não terei mais do que 10 peças até o fim do ano. Muitas dúvidas.

Como eu sou jornalista e diagramadora, o meu trabalho permite roupas mais criativas. Já tenho um estilo bem definido, o que me ajuda a não cair nas tentações da moda. A ideia é abusar das peças coringa que sobram no meu guarda-roupas e deixar o charme do look para os sapatos, acessórios, sobreposições e invenções, mas isso vocês vão ver depois. Maquiagem e esmaltes coloridos também vão ajudar muito nessa hora. O segredo do sucesso é ser criativa!!!

Então mãos à obra porque um inventário precisa ser feito.

One year without buying clothes. Help me, now what? Since I accepted the challenge, I cannot stop thinking about what would be best strategy. Should I invest in accessories? But they are also on the no-buying list. Trade clothes at exchange stores every month? But in the exchange store they give you less than what you trade, so by the end of the year I'd have no more than 10 items in my wardrobe. So many doubts.

As I am a journalist and designer, my job allows me to wear more creative clothes. I already have a well-defined styled, which helps me not fall into the temptations of fashion. The idea is to abuse the unexplored parts of my closed and let the shoes, accessories, overlays and inventions make the look, but that you will see later. Make up and colorful nail polish will also help a lot in that period. The secret of success is being creative!


So let me get to work because an inventory needs to be done.
