Looks do Carnaval 2012 / 2012 Carnival in Brazil Looks

Note: This post is bilingual, English translation at the bottom half.

E dá pra usar no inverno?

We're doing things a little bit different today! Anita and Michele have teamed up to talk about Carnival looks and how you can wear them when the vacation is over!

Michele:

We usually have guest posts today, but Anita and I decided to "steal" this space and write a little more about Carnival!

When we think Carnival, whether we like the party or not, our first thought is a lot of glitter and exaggerated looks, however, you can take part in this celebration with basic and casual outfits, even some we wear it on a daily basis.

I got some images from the web to show that with a lot of color, and, why not, color blocking we showed last week, you can wear what you already own to go enjoy Carnival:

I went to a street parade, in the beach, with a Trio Elétrico (a huge truck with an advanced and powerful sound system that works as a moving stage in Carnival) and everything. My choice of outfit was a green tank top, a dark blue belt and black shorts, that, along with my golden headband and a lei, got me in the mood for the party!

And you don't need a store-bought costume to enjoy it! I selected a few pictures from my friends and their carnival looks. You'll see if you just take a few accessories out, their outfit is perfect for a beach party!

Anita:
Luckily for me, there is no Carnival in the US (If there is, I don't know about it), but not so lucky for this post, as Michele and I set out to get a few of the most inspiring Carnival looks we saw this past week on our friends, and how to transition them from carnival-wear to city-wear. A daunting challenge, though, when I figured out that most of my friends are very similar to me, and don't post pictures on Facebook. But if my real life friends are not keen on sharing their personal lives online, I could go look for other real life examples of people that, like us, share their lives online. Lookbook.nu is one of my favorite sources for fashion inspiration from real people, and it was there that I found those two beautiful Brazilian girls sharing their Carnival looks:

Isadora's look is the perfect weekend outfit —be it Carnival or not— and if the skirt was a bit longer I'd say you could rock that at the workplace too on warmer days! Glena's outfit is also pure weekend-at-the-beach comfort, but also an easy look to sport in the city, to go to the mall or for a coffee with your friends in a sunny afternoon. If you want to wear this in the winter too, you can, just add boots and a nice warm jacket on top (that's what I do!).

I was pretty impressed too upon finding that Fergie and J. Lo were enjoying Carnival in Brazil, and with such adorable looks! Celebrities are always a good way to spot trends you might like to try, and here in this two pictures she wears two (and wears it well!).

The pastels mixed with metallics in the first look are gorgeous, and I say there's a good chance that pastels are here to stay. So if your skin color permits you to wear pastels, now is the time to do it! In the second picture, she is wearing two trends: fringe and pants with patterns. I am not particularly a big fan of fringes, but Fergie was wise and picked them in white with a dark blazer on top, so she looks discreet, but ready for fun. Drop the fringe shirt, and you could wear this look in a more relaxed word setting. The pants are fantastic, and if you have long and skinny legs, go for it.

J. Lo is also looking beautiful in this all-white look: the perfect outfit for a day at the beach, especially if this beach is in Rio. But this outfit works well even in the middle of the desert where I live, and it's a good option for the cooler nights of summer.

  1. There is something like Brazilian Carnival in New Orleans, it's called Mardi Gras, but I don't think it's spread all over US like Carnival is here.

  2. Hi Cris! I don't think Mardi Gras hold too many similarities to Carnival. Mardi Gras is more like the street festivals in Venice, I think Brazil went a total different way.
