She said "I think I remember the film"

A quick commentary before we get back to celebrating Carol's week on Occupy: Occupy has reached its FIFTH MONTH's anniversary. That means we haven't shopped for entire five months. Whew, soon it will be a year.

Back to our scheduled programming to celebrate Carol's birthday, with the theme Breakfast at Tiffany's. I loved the theme, I think Audrey Hepburn is a paragon of elegance, but as I opened my wardrobe, I couldn't help but listen Holly Golightly's voice over my shoulder, totally frustrated with my wardrobe. Sorry, Holly, but I don't think I own anything you'd wear!

Because of that, I decided to "stretch" the theme a little and get inspired by title of the movie. So I grabbed a skirt (I made it!) and a necklace in the same shade of green/blue as Tiffany's, and threw in a little sweater because that morning was cold. All I needed was a cup of coffee and a croissant, and I'd be making a good Holly impression in front of Tiffany's early on Sunday morning.

Halfway there with my midi skirt / Na metade do caminho com a minha saia midi

So when we started this, it was all about taking chances, right? Girl can't shop for a year, she has got to get creative and take risks. And ultimately, wear the things she has in her wardrobe that scares her. By her, I mean me, of course. And you, if you are up to the challenge of getting on friendly terms with your wardrobe.

This week, the challenge was to style a skirt. Sounds easy enough, right? I mean, I have a LOT of skirts. But I don't like easy. I tend to make things more complicated on purpose, I like that. Always the overachiever in class. So this week, I started by wearing my favorite skirts: the red maxi from Anthropologie, the dark blue maxi from Forever 21, my pencil skirts... But after putting together every look, it just didn't feel like the RIGHT look for this week. None of those were challenging, I wear those outfits on my sleep.

But this skirt, this midi pleated gray skirt from Forever 21, it's always a challenge. Mostly because of my height and not having skinny legs, I tend to not like skirts that fall a few inches below my knee. Short or long, not a big fan of the in between. So how do I make a look that's special, that is worthy of this blog? Well that's how:

Skirt: Forever 21 | Shirt: GAP (seen here before) | Necklace: Ebay | Heels: Nine West (seen here before)

Photo credits: The amazing photographer was Dana Simmons, I did the post processing, and the fantastic location was the Westminster College campus (on one of those rare days when we actually took a lunch break). I thought it would be fun to see that I do actually wear my crazy outfits at work!

Moral of the story: If you are like me and think your legs are too fat for midi-skirts, wear them with heels. It really helps shaping up your legs and giving you the length that the skirt takes away from you. Then pair it up with a few fun pieces up top, and you're gold. I wore this skirt out today, and felt really good about it.

What about you, what are you afraid to wear?

Realmente ajuda a alongar as pernas.

Guest Blogger / Leitora Convidada: Sara Quintero

Hiya! I'm Sara Quintero, a soon-to-be-masters-degree graduate, a project manager for an ad agency, a pop-culture freak, a lover of learning. I'm 31 and live in a city that has a piece of my heart, Salt Lake.

I'm not sure I know how to classify my style...obviously I'm fairly preppy. I gravitate toward structured clothes because they look best on my body but because that tends to be a look I most often lust after. I don't wear a ton of flowy or bohemian pieces, but simply because that tends to not be my thing.

I don't have much time these days to shop (just a little thing people like to call a crazy-demanding job combined with a master's thesis is to blame for that tragedy), so I do a lot of online shopping. yes, this typically means sending a lot of things back and waiting for the refund, but it's just more conducive to how busy I am. knowing my exact measurements helps, and once you buy from a store, you remember what size you run. I do a lot of shopping at JCrew, Nordstrom, Zara, Asos, and Topshop.

The last thing i bought was my Michael Kohrs watch and a few key pieces at JCrew. I am badly in need of some new kicks, so those are next on my list.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of not shopping for a year. I don't think i could personally do it, so I really look up to Anita for taking on this challenge. I often feel silly or shallow or trite at how much I love fashion and shopping-- I have a love/hate relationship with it quite often, so Anita's idea really appeals to a lot of my affections. But at the end of the day the most important inventory I take of my life is how authentically, clearly, and healthfully I am living. as long as I can answer that in a way that I am proud of, then shopping or not, happiness is better than anything else.

Oi!

Então a idéia da Anita realmente me agrada.

Saia no inverno e no verão / Skirt all year long

This week's theme is super easy!

I love skirts and I wear mine often, be it in the summer with flats or high heels, or in the winter with thick tights and boots. I wear it to work and on the weekend! Short, long or midi! Therefore: I love, love, love, love this item and I think women should wear them more often!

For today's look I chose a skirt I got from mu cousin when she was giving some of her stuff away. I love it, and I hope you like it too

Guest Blogger/Leitora Convidada: Ingrid

I’m Ingrid... aka Guiga. I’m a journalist and news designer. By the way, I work with Carol, from Occupy! I’m 32 today... but tomorrow I’ll be 33.

My style is very casual. I envy people that knows how to dress neatly... put an outfit together, wear heels all the time... but I’m more a “jeans+t-shirt+all star” kinda girl. For the blog I chose a more put together, lady-like outfit.

I don’t really care much for brands. If I like something and I think it’ll be usefull, I buy it. If I find it gorgeus but I know I’m not gonna wear it that much, I don’t buy it. I don’t buy many shoes or accessories. I like to buy tops and jeans pants.

A baby look T-shirt in a store that sells esoteric items. I fell in love for it! That was last week.

I’m not much of a consumist, but I would find it very hard to do, ‘cause  I love to window shop and ocasionally I end up going home with a piece or two of clothing!

Super easy DIY spring skirt!

Since I started Occupy the Wardrobe, I've decided that it was time for me to finally learn how to sew. I've always loved clothes and always wanted to try my hand at making them (too many Project Runaway marathons to blame). This January, thanks to Occupy, I finally signed up for a class. I'm learning a lot of very basic skills, that I think anyone can easily pick up! I did this skirt over the weekend, and I'll know show you how easy it was!

This DIY is adapted from Sewing in a Straight Line. If you like it, you should definitely get this book, t has a lot of really easy DIYs of clothes, home and gifts.

You'll need:
  • 1-2 yds of the fabric of your preference (I used 100% cotton because it's the easiest to sew)
  • Thread in the color of your fabric
  • 1 3/4" elastic band in the size of the circumference of your waist.
  • Pins
  • Safety pin
  • Measuring Tape
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing Machine (you can also do it by hand, it just takes longer!)
  • Iron
How to:

1. With the measuring tape, measure the circumference of the widest part of your lower body (hips on my case, but yours could be the waist!). Write that measurement down:
2. Cut two pieces of fabric that are 22 1/2" by the measurement you just got on step one.
3. Pin both pieces of fabric with the right side in. Like this:
4. Sew the sides you pinned, about an 1/4" (6mm) from the edges.
5. Now we'll sew the waistband. Turn under the top edge about an 1/2" (13mm) and iron it, creating a crease, like this:

6. On the same top edge, fold it again, but now about 2" (5cm), and iron it, like this:

7. Sew all around the top edge, leaving an opening of about 4" (10cm) near one of the side seams.
8. Now we'll hem the bottom edge of the skirt. The process is similar to sewing the waistband, we fold it about 1/2" (13mm), iron it, then fold it another 1/2" (13mm) and press it again.
9. Sew the hem.
10. Now we're almost ready, all that's left to do is put the elastic band in the casing you created in step seven. You'll need a safety pin and a regular pin for that. Attach the safety pin to one end of your elastic band. Attach the other en of the elastic band with a pin somewhere near the opening of the case, this way you won't risk loosing your elastic inside the casing!
11. Insert the band with the safety pin on the casing opening. Carefully, and using the safety pin as guide, insert all of your elastic in the waistband casing. It takes a while.
12. When you're done, make sure you have both ends of the elastic band outside of the casing opening, and that the elastic did not got turned around inside.
13. After you made sure it was all flat, put both edges of the elastic together and sew over them three or four times.
14. Put all the elastic inside the casing, turn the skirt on its right side and try it on, and if you're happy with the length and the tightness of the waistband, you can sew closed the opening you used to sew in the elastic.

Skirt: DIY / Boots: Wanted / Sweater: Forever 21 / Bracelet is a belt from Forever 21

Ta-da! It is really that easy, and you can finish it super quick. If you have any questions about it, or need more clarifications on the steps, let me know in the comments and I'd be glad to help!
