Reflections on (almost) a year without buying / Reflexões sobre um ano (quase) sem comprar

31 weeks - 31 semanas

Long time no see. But I'm still here! As you already know, I'm pregnant. When I last wrote here, I was 20 weeks pregnant and had already bought a thing or two. First I had to buy underwear, because my boobs got quite bigger. Then I had to buy shoes, because most of my shoes were high heels, not a little bit comfortable for a pregnant lady.

Then I bought a dress, because I needed something bigger. I have quite a lot of dresses, but they are not for pregnant ladies. Now I am 31 weeks and I bought a new (and huge) dress for New Year's Eve and a bikini, because we are going to the beach and my bikinis are all small (I never had big breasts and only wore bikinis when thin). As my belly is much bigger and I've put quite a lot of weight (13 kilos or almost 29 pounds), I really needed new clothes.

But I decided not to buy pants (it's summer here now and I'm ok with dresses), nor other kind of accessories (and I desperately need a new leather bag!). I'm postponing these buys for 2013, after the challenge ends.

This blog was very helpful this year. I had time to review my shopping (bad) habits and then I started to apply the not buying concept to other things, even groceries. I managed to save money and my goal for 2013 is to save even more (I'll have my baby then, but I think I'll be able to continue this frugal behaviour).

As for my baby girl, I managed to apply the no buying to her. Of course I bought diapers, cute little outfits and stuff. But I know I managed to keep it under control. I see other moms to be around me going completely wild on baby shopping. I'm very lucky because I got a lot of presents.

What will be the challenge for 2013? Go back to shopping without over spending. Making sensible shopping choices. Keeping my baby dressed on a low budget. She'll become a part of Occupy the Wardrobe as well. Let's see how we manage this.

Há quanto tempo! Mas ainda estou aqui! Como vocês já sabem, estou grávida. Quando escrevi por último aqui, eu estava de 20 semanas e já tinha comprado uma coisinha ou outra. Primeiro precisei de roupas de baixo, porque meus seios cresceram um tanto. Depois tive que comprar sapatos, porque a maioria dos meus sapatos é de salto, nem um pouco confortáveis para uma senhora grávida.

Então eu comprei um vestido, porque eu precisava de algo maior. Eu tenho um monte de vestidos, mas não são para mulheres grávidas. Agora estou 31 semanas e comprei um vestido (enorme e) novo para a véspera de Ano Novo e um biquíni, porque nós estamos indo para a praia e os meus biquínis são todos pequenos (eu nunca tive seios grandes e só usava biquínis quando magra). Como a minha barriga está muito maior e eu engordei um tanto (13 quilos), eu realmente precisava de roupas novas.

Mas eu decidi não comprar calças (é verão aqui agora e eu estou bem com vestidos), nem outro tipo de acessórios (e eu preciso desesperadamente de uma bolsa de couro nova!). Eu estou adiando essas compras para 2013, após o término do desafio.

Este blog foi muito útil este ano. Eu tive tempo para rever meus (maus) hábitos de consumir e então eu comecei a aplicar o conceito de não comprar a outras coisas, até mesmo mantimentos. Eu consegui economizar dinheiro e minha meta para 2013 é economizar ainda mais (eu vou ter o meu bebê, então, mas eu acho que vou ser capaz de continuar este comportamento frugal).

Quanto à minha menina, eu consegui aplicar o não comprar a ela. É claro que eu comprei fraldas, roupas bonitinhas e tal. Mas eu sei que consegui manter os impulsos consumistas sob controle. Eu vejo outras mães perto de mim completamente malucas comprando coisas de bebê de maneira compulsiva. Eu tenho muita sorte, porque eu ganhei um monte de presentes.

Qual será o desafio para 2013? Volte para compras sem mais gastos. Fazer escolhas comerciais sensíveis. Mantendo meu bebê vestido com um baixo orçamento. Ela vai se tornar parte de ocupar o guarda-roupa também. Vamos ver como conseguimos isso.

Pregnant Wednesday / Quarta da grávida (20 weeks / 20 semanas)

Today we start our weekly look of the day for pregnant women. I'm currently on my 20th week, going to the 21st. And soon I'll have to go shopping for clothes. But so far, I have only bought underwear, which I told you about here. 

We already know it's going to be a baby girl! And we want name suggestions! Please leave yours on the comments bellow.

Dressing up while pregnant is quite a challenge. Accostumed as I was to high heels, I had to switch to ballerina flats and other things like that, because my feet hurt! Also I'm happily getting used to have giant breasts compared to what they were before I got pregnant. But it's quite hard to find comfortable bras for big breasts here in Brazil.

Plus, my belly, as you can see, is getting huge! To follow this week's theme, I chose red, for ruby!

Essa semana começamos com o nosso look do dia semanal, para gravidinhas. Estou na 20a semana, indo para a 21a. E logo vou ter que comprar roupas. Mas por enquanto, só comprei roupa de baixo, como falei aqui.

Vestir-se enquanto grávida é um desafio. Acostumada que eu estava aos saltos, tive que descer deles e começar a usar sapatilhas e rasteiras, porque meus pés doíam! Mas estou alegremente me acostumando aos meus enormes seios, comparado com o que eles eram antes de eu engravidar. Só que é bem difícil encontrar sutiãs confortáveis para seios grandes aqui no Brasil.

Ainda, minha barriga tá ficando enorme! Pra seguir o tema dessa semana escolhi vermelho, de rubi.

This week I'm off the look of the day. I'm so sorry, but I simply don't have ANYTHING, anything at all that has polka dots, not even a pair of socks. I find it pretty, but I don't know, maybe it doesn't suit me or I was afraid to try. So I went to our sponsors to look for pretty polka dots clothing, and I found this.

Essa semana estou fora do look do dia. Sinto muito mesmo, mas eu não tenha NADA, nadinha, que tenha bolinhas, nem mesmo um parzinho de meias. I LOVE my sneakers! / Amo meus tênis!

Unfortunetely I can't wear them everyday, because I need to dress formal for work, but I really love my sneakers. Super confy and super cool. Yesterday was a holiday here, so I went for a walk about town with a friend.

We ended up at a super nice cafe and clothes shop (fortunetely, the beautiful dresses they sell at Oi Gracia are not mom fit, so I could easily resist them), where we sat and ate delicious whoopies.

Infelizmente não posso usá-los todos os dias, porque preciso ser mais formal para o trabalho, mas eu realmente amo meus tênis. São super confortáveis e super cool. Ontem foi feriado, então saí pra caminhar pela cidade com uma amiga.

Acabamos chegando num café super simpático que é também loja de roupas (felizmente, os lindos vestidos que eles vendem na Oi Gracia não são para corpinhos de mãe, assim foi fácil resistir), onde sentamos e comemos deliciosos whoopies.

So I have great news: I'm pregnant! And my baby bump is starting to show! So this challenge just got harder! I have to tell you that I bought underwear, my belly is bigger and so are my breasts, so I had to buy 2 new bras and these fancy #NOT panties (my husband is so not loving them! lol).

I promise that I'll try not to buy anything (apart from underwear, which is really necessary) until the end of the year. I'll try to make the best out of the mountain of clothes that I have. The good thing is that I have a lot of dresses, and soon spring will start here in Brazil, so I can start wearing dresses.

For my workwear look, I tried to get confortable and look a little like business. I think a good blazer does the trick. And black pants.

Prometo que tentarei ficar sem comprar nada até o final do ano (a não ser roupa de baixo, porque é muito necessário). Tentarei fazer o melhor possível com a montanha de roupas que eu tenho. A coisa boa é que tenho muitos vestidos e logo a primavera começa, então vou poder usá-los.

Pro meu look da semana sobre trabalho, tentei ficar confortável e com um pouco de cara de séria. Acho que um blazer ajuda muito num look pra ir trabalhar, assim como calças pretas.

Quem é você? Who are you?

Chamo-me Maria Cota, tenho 34 anos (acabadinhos de fazer!), sou portuguesa e vivo em Viseu, uma cidade de média dimensão do interior de Portugal. Sou tradutora de Inglês/Alemão e trabalho na área do turismo, na promoção externa da região Centro de Portugal.

My name is Maria Cota. I am 34 years-old (I just turned 34!), Portuguese and I live in Viseu, a medium-sized city located in the inland of Portugal. I am an English/German translator and I work in the Tourism branch, namely in the foreign promotion of the central region of Portugal. 

Qual seu estilo? What is your style?

Em linhas gerais, o meu estilo é muito feminino e sóbrio, com alguns toques de meninice. Mas sempre adorei coisas de menina: laçarotes, flores, bolinhas, folhinhos, etc. Sou completamente obcecada pelo “pendant” e seria incapaz de combinar cores e padrões que não tivessem nada em comum. Ainda que possa parecer démodé, combino sempre a mala com os sapatos, as pulseiras, os colares. Adoro muita cor, mesmo no Inverno que nesta região de Portugal é extremamente frio e algo melancólico. Por isso, mesmo no Inverno, uso casacos cor de rosa, amarelos, verde-alface!... Creio que tenho um estilo que, embora discreto, não passa despercebido.

Generally speaking, my style is very feminine with some hints of girly. I’ve always loved typical girl things, such as: bows, flowers, balls, flounces, and so on. I’m totally obsessed with matching, for I couldn’t possibly match totally disparate colours or patterns. Even though it may sound old-fashioned, I always match my purse with the shoes, bracelets, necklaces. I’m totally into colour, even in winter, which is extremely cold and somehow melancholic in this region of Portugal. So in Winter time I wear pink, yellow or green jackets! I consider my style to be discrete, but noticeable. 

Como costuma ser seu processo de compra de roupas/sapatos/acessórios?

Em Portugal, há o pré- e o pós-“troika” (FMI e União Europeia). Antes de a “troika” entrar em Portugal com a sua rigorosa política de austeridade e de penoso incremento do custo geral de vida, a vida era bela para as consumidoras femininas que se deliciavam nas compras. E eu não era, certamente, excepção. Cheguei mesmo a pensar que era “shopaholic” e o processo de compra de roupas, sapatos ou acessórios era completamente irracional e impulsivo.

No entanto, com a chegada da troika, começou o longo Inverno e as compras de roupa passaram a realizar-se muito mais em função da necessidade do que da futilidade, o que, de certa forma, foi refrescante. O consumo desses bens tornou-se muito mais contido e creio que agora valorizo muito mais o (pouco) que compro. E é um apelo à criatividade e ao poder de combinar as peças que temos no armário. 

In Portugal there is the pre and the post troika (IMF and European Union). Before the arrival of the troika with its austere policy of austerity and harmful rise of the cost of living, life was beautiful for feminine consumers who had a great time shopping. And I was no exception. At some point I actually thought I was becoming a shopaholic and the process of buying clothes, shoes or accessories was completely irrational and impulsive.

However, when the troika came into the country, a long winter began and we started to buy clothes based on need rather than on futility, which was somehow refreshing. Consumption of these goods became much more restricted and I do believe that now I have a stronger notion of the value of the little things I buy. It is also an appeal to creativity and to the power of matching things we have in our closet.

O que acha de passar um ano inteiro sem comprar? What do you think of spending a year without shopping for clothes?

Um ano inteiro sem comprar é um enorme desafio, sobretudo para o sexo feminino, mais propenso à tentação das compras. No entanto, pode também ser uma oportunidade para reflectir sobre o consumismo desenfreado e para começar a apreciar as inúmeras peças que, certamente, repousam nos nossos armários, votadas ao abandono!

A whole year without shopping is a great challenge, especially for women, who are more inclined to fall in temptation. However, it can also be a chance to think about consumption and to start to appreciate the several pieces that certainly rest on our wardrobes, completely abandoned!

I'm not really into patterns, but I do like florals. It's been cold here and I was worried how would I come up with a floral look, as all my flowerly clothes are summer clothes. But then the day today is so beautiful, and not really that cold, that I think I managed to go out looking kinda pretty.

You've seen this dress here before, and also this bag and pantyhose.

Eu não curto muito estampas, mas gosto de floral. Tem estado frio aqui e eu tava preocupada que não ia conseguir fazer meu look floral, já que minhas roupas floridas são todas de verão. Mas hoje tá um dia tão bonito, e não muito frio, então acho que consegui sair bonita.

I've always been interested in fashion, ever since I can remember, I bought piles of magazines, being Elle my favorite one. But I never took it seriously and Occupy the Wardrobe has been a real challenge for me. It also made me get to know fashion blogs I didn't care about, and now I'm completely in love with Cupcakes and Cashmere, by Emily Schuman. She makes everything seem so easy! She even cooks! How can one be stilish and cook at the same time? It's a total mistery!

She wrote a book I am completely crazy about! I gotta have it! You can get it at Amazon, as I will get a copy for me! Apart from clothes and shoes, books are one of my biggest passions. At Amazon you can find so many fashion books, like this selection Anita made here.

Also, I'm totally in love with Lauren Conrad's & friends The Beauty Department. It's full of hair tutorials and cool tips on fashion. And Lauren Conrad, too, has books, one on Beauty and the other on Style and I so want them both!

I'm also planning my clothing shopping list for next year (january 1st, 2013 is finally coming closer!) and I'm head over heels for Ruche's dresses! Later I'll share my wishlist here, but you should take a look!

Sempre gostei de moda, desde que consigo lembrar, sempre comprei pilhas e pilhas de revistas, sendo a Elle a minha favorita. Mas nunca levei muito a sério e o Occupy the Wardrobe tem sido um verdadeiro desafio pra mim. Também me fez conhecer blogs que antes eu não daria a mínima e agora estou totalmente apaixonada pelo Cupcakes & Cashmere, da Emily Schuman. Ela faz tudo parecer tão fácil! Ela até cozinha! Além disso, também estou completamente apaixonada pelo blog da Lauren Conrad e umas amigas, The Beauty Department. Tem um monte de tutoriais de penteados e dicas de moda. E a Lauren Conrad também tem livros, um sobre Beleza e o outro sobre Estilo , que eu quero muito!

Também estou planejando minha lista de compra de roupas para o ano que vem (1o de janeiro de 2013 finalmente está ficando mais pertinho!) e estou totalmente in love com os vestidos da Ruche! Mais tarde vou compartilhar minha wishlist aqui, mas dá uma olhada lá!
