This Dress? Oh, I Made It.

I'm very excited to share this outfit with you all today because it's another one of my creations. This velvety smooth, purple-ish dress is probably the best piece of clothing I've made so far! To be perfectly honest, I got the zipper pretty messed up on the first try, but then after un-stitching everything and putting it back together (after a few cuts and re-presses too) to finally get it perfect! I love it!

The fabric is super warm, so perfect for this weather, and I think that the skirt fits very well. I used a pattern from Butterick, the B5520. It was a great pattern, super easy to figure out the instructions, and very little fabric cutting compared to other things I've made! I styled it with simple gold accent pieces. Oh, and this fantastic bag? A gift from my boyfriend's mom. Yup, I couldn't believe it when I opened the box either.

Dress: Sew Anita (made by me!) | Necklace (seen here and here before) & Ring: Forever 21
Belt: Ruche (seen here, here, herehere, here, here, here, and here before)
Flats: Styke&Co (birthday gift) | Scarf: ModCloth
Purse: Coach (Christmas gift) | Nail Polish: Zoya Haley (my favorite red ever)

I wore this to: Work on January 10, 2013

I think this year, for Occupy, I'll try to make clothes instead of buying. I'll buy a few things, especially things I can't make yet like jeans, jackets, sweaters. But I'll give it a try to make dresses and skirts instead of buying new! What do you guys think?

Super easy DIY spring skirt! / Uma saia super fácil que você mesma pode fazer

Nota: este post é bilíngue, a tradução para o português está logo abaixo.

Since I started Occupy the Wardrobe, I've decided that it was time for me to finally learn how to sew. I've always loved clothes and always wanted to try my hand at making them (too many Project Runaway marathons to blame). This January, thanks to Occupy, I finally signed up for a class. I'm learning a lot of very basic skills, that I think anyone can easily pick up! I did this skirt over the weekend, and I'll know show you how easy it was!

This DIY is adapted from Sewing in a Straight Line. If you like it, you should definitely get this book, t has a lot of really easy DIYs of clothes, home and gifts.

You'll need:
  • 1-2 yds of the fabric of your preference (I used 100% cotton because it's the easiest to sew)
  • Thread in the color of your fabric
  • 1 3/4" elastic band in the size of the circumference of your waist.
  • Pins
  • Safety pin
  • Measuring Tape
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing Machine (you can also do it by hand, it just takes longer!)
  • Iron
How to:

1. With the measuring tape, measure the circumference of the widest part of your lower body (hips on my case, but yours could be the waist!). Write that measurement down:
2. Cut two pieces of fabric that are 22 1/2" by the measurement you just got on step one.
3. Pin both pieces of fabric with the right side in. Like this:
4. Sew the sides you pinned, about an 1/4" (6mm) from the edges.
5. Now we'll sew the waistband. Turn under the top edge about an 1/2" (13mm) and iron it, creating a crease, like this:

6. On the same top edge, fold it again, but now about 2" (5cm), and iron it, like this:

7. Sew all around the top edge, leaving an opening of about 4" (10cm) near one of the side seams.
8. Now we'll hem the bottom edge of the skirt. The process is similar to sewing the waistband, we fold it about 1/2" (13mm), iron it, then fold it another 1/2" (13mm) and press it again.
9. Sew the hem.
10. Now we're almost ready, all that's left to do is put the elastic band in the casing you created in step seven. You'll need a safety pin and a regular pin for that. Attach the safety pin to one end of your elastic band. Attach the other en of the elastic band with a pin somewhere near the opening of the case, this way you won't risk loosing your elastic inside the casing!
11. Insert the band with the safety pin on the casing opening. Carefully, and using the safety pin as guide, insert all of your elastic in the waistband casing. It takes a while.
12. When you're done, make sure you have both ends of the elastic band outside of the casing opening, and that the elastic did not got turned around inside.
13. After you made sure it was all flat, put both edges of the elastic together and sew over them three or four times.
14. Put all the elastic inside the casing, turn the skirt on its right side and try it on, and if you're happy with the length and the tightness of the waistband, you can sew closed the opening you used to sew in the elastic.

Skirt: DIY / Boots: Wanted / Sweater: Forever 21 / Bracelet is a belt from Forever 21

Ta-da! It is really that easy, and you can finish it super quick. If you have any questions about it, or need more clarifications on the steps, let me know in the comments and I'd be glad to help!
