Pride and Prejudice / Orgulho e Preconceito

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in
possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Happy Halloween! I'm so excited about sharing my Halloween costume with you guys, because this is probably the best one I have ever had! I know it's not obvious who I am because I'm wearing a period dress, but in case you are wondering, I'm going for Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's masterpiece and one of my favorite books ever. So I got a pattern for a Regency Era (roughly between 1790-1830, pretty much the time of Jane Austen) dress, and some fabric, and created this dress!

The credit for the dress goes all to me, but the wonderful bonnet was a creation of my friend Jen Jenkins, who's a very talented seamstress, and apparently hat maker too! So, in the photo below, just the jacket is something I already owned, which I got about two years ago at Nordstrom Rack. But enough talk, and enjoy the photos!

Inspiration: Elizabeth Bennet from BBC's Pride and Prejudice.

TV in the workplace: Mad Men

Is anyone not watching Mad Men yet? Well, if you're not, you should. Great show, amazing characters, and amazing fashion. I thought this workwear themed week would be perfect to share some of the great costuming happening in this show.

Tomboy / Moleca

This week's inspiration is vintage and I was afraid I wouldn't, again, be able to come up with a look. Even though Anita made this beautiful inspirational post and our guest simply rocked, I think I'm not very creative when it comes to fashion. All I could think for today was this rather 50's tomboy look. Inspired by our divas Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.

My friend Paula Coruja, from Bolsa de Pandora, wrote a nice post on vintage, check it out.

Cardigan: H&M | Tank top/ Blusinha: H&M | Pants / Calças: Stella McCartney C&A | Shoes/ Sapatos: Bottero

Guest Blogger/Leitora Convidada: Johanna Snow

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah with my husband, artist Charley Snow, and our menagerie of pets. I'm a marketing professional by trade, but I am passionate about art, gardening, cooking, and crafting. I love to cook, bake, knit, and make jewelry.

I've always had a love for all things vintage and antique in both design and fashion. I love Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Mid-century Modern.

I'm owner of two vintage based businesses. I'm co-owner and curator of Amourette Vintage, a vintage clothing store that specializes in remarkable, high-end, high-quality vintage fashion from the 1920s to the 1980s. Each piece in our collection is hand selected for style and wearability. Amourette vintage can be found atwww.etsy.com/shop/AmouretteVintage

In addition Amourette Vintage, I am owner and jewelry designer at The Artist's Wife. My creations, made from deconstructed vintage jewelry and artifacts, can be found at www.etsy.com/shop/TheArtistsWifeCO

What am I wearing?
Top: Fun vintage inspired blouse with ruffles and a peter pan collar from Banana Republic
Sweater: Super girly cardigan from Anthropologie in teal
Skirt: Amazing vintage. Probably from the 1940s. I just love it's mid-century pattern (that kind of looks like pineapples) and the ruffle pockets and hemline.
Shoe: Tahari. I love to wear a brightly colored shoe in summertime!

Why I like vintage style:I have always love vintage things. I love hunting for treasuries at estate sales and antique shops. I grow up antiquing on the weekends with my parents--I guess that's where it started. I also have lots of fond memories of watching old movies with my mother on days I was home sick from school. I love the costumes/clothes the most in those movies. I also really value two ideas when it comes to fashion: uniqueness and being lady like. I have also want my clothes and my sense of style to be unique to me--I want what I wear to say something about who I am. And I want to convey an image of femininity without being trashy.

What's your style? My personal style can be described as feminine, vintage inspired, and flirty. My style icons are Audrey Hepburn and Zooey Deschanel.

What's your shopping process like? For the most part, I shop online. I rarely have time to go to the mall, and prefer not to anyway. When I do go shopping I try to stick to small local boutiques--I like to try and find unique piece (new or vintage). My weakness is Anthropologie. I like to hunt down deals on Anthropologie on Ebay.

What was the last thing you bought? The last thing I bought was the skirt I'm wearing in these photos. I originally bought it for Amourette but decided to keep it for myself.

What do you think of not shopping for a year? When I first heard about the Occupy Wardrobe project, I thought to myself, "Oh my god, I could never do that!". But I wished I could. It seems like a great exercise and I not different than any other gal who has a closet full of things I never wear--why not "shop" in your own closet. Bring out the old and make it new. Maybe I'll try it next year.

Like Audrey (?)

I swear this was the best photo that came out of the bunch. I just wasn't photogenic today.

The inspiration for my vintage look was Audrey Hepburn. We already had a Audrey theme week back in the first semester of the blog! But I didn't do a Audrey inspired look back then, because those awesome cigarette pants I'm wearing today, did not exist yet. I made them a while ago, and they were pretty easy!

But the cool thing about my outfit, is that the pearl necklace I'm wearing could be actually called vintage. But I'm not sure how vintage applies to jewelry, especially pearl necklaces. I could have just gotten it the year before, and it would look basically the same. But this one I'm wearing, used to belong to my grandma. It was a necklace with three strands of pearls, that she got it refashioned into 3 necklaces. The oldest cousin got the longest one, the youngest the shortest one, and I got the middle one (I'm not the middle cousin, though, I'm the second youngest!). And since my grandma passed away recently, and I've been thinking and missing her a lot lately, it just felt right to add her necklace to this look, and I don't care when it's from. It was hers.

A few months ago I wore this outfit to work, and I thought I was much more photogenic that day, and the nails were done too:

Inspiration Post: A Vintage Week / Semana Retro

Hello everyone! Our theme this week is another good one: vintage or vintage inspired! But I have to admit and say I'm not an expert on this theme, so I had to do some research before sharing my inspiration post, and I thought a few of you would enjoy it as well.

I found two ways to determine if a piece is vintage. Wikipedia said that vintage clothing is anything produced in the 1920s thru the 1960s, but I've also read (can't remember the source) that for an article to be considered vintage, it would have to been at least 20 years old (which makes sense when you see how many 80s clothes show up in vintage shops).

So now I go in search of inspiration of vintage and vintage inspired looks! I'll admit that I have been in a Mad Men kick lately (fantastic show) so I might be biased towards 50s and 60s pieces! But let me know in the comments of other great vintage or vintage inspired outfits that you see out there!

Dress: TimelessVixenVintage on Etsy

For this first outfit inspiration, I found this beautiful 1950s Hawaiian-print dress, and I thought it would be a super elegant dress for a weekday at work, especially with those hit summer temperatures! The dress is so loud and pretty, though, that I wanted to keep the rest of the ensemble clean and minimalistic. With a blazer on top (black or white) I'd be ready to work.

Dress: AmouretteVintage on Etsy

I love this peplum 1980s dress that I saw at my friend's shop, Amourette Vintage (she has some really cute pieces for sale, you should check it out!). I think this would be the perfect dress for a girls' night out, so if I was wearing it today, I'd go all out with heavy gold jewelry and spiked high heels.

Dress: Vintageous

This is a great look for St. Patrick's Day (yes, I'm being funny!). But I thought the gold and green together were so luxurious. With a dress like this, you don't really need much else in terms of accessories, just a few accents to make you shine (literally, apparently).

Here are some more swoon-worthy pieces I found on Etsy:

And to get you inspired for the week, check out those vintage-inspired outfits by amazing blogger and photographer Jamie from From me To You (if you love photography and fashion, do add her blog to your daily readings! It's fantastic):

Guest Blogger / Leitora Convidada: Sara Quintero

Hiya! I'm Sara Quintero, a soon-to-be-masters-degree graduate, a project manager for an ad agency, a pop-culture freak, a lover of learning. I'm 31 and live in a city that has a piece of my heart, Salt Lake.

I'm not sure I know how to classify my style...obviously I'm fairly preppy. I gravitate toward structured clothes because they look best on my body but because that tends to be a look I most often lust after. I don't wear a ton of flowy or bohemian pieces, but simply because that tends to not be my thing.

I don't have much time these days to shop (just a little thing people like to call a crazy-demanding job combined with a master's thesis is to blame for that tragedy), so I do a lot of online shopping. yes, this typically means sending a lot of things back and waiting for the refund, but it's just more conducive to how busy I am. knowing my exact measurements helps, and once you buy from a store, you remember what size you run. I do a lot of shopping at JCrew, Nordstrom, Zara, Asos, and Topshop.

The last thing i bought was my Michael Kohrs watch and a few key pieces at JCrew. I am badly in need of some new kicks, so those are next on my list.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of not shopping for a year. I don't think i could personally do it, so I really look up to Anita for taking on this challenge. I often feel silly or shallow or trite at how much I love fashion and shopping-- I have a love/hate relationship with it quite often, so Anita's idea really appeals to a lot of my affections. But at the end of the day the most important inventory I take of my life is how authentically, clearly, and healthfully I am living. as long as I can answer that in a way that I am proud of, then shopping or not, happiness is better than anything else.

[PT]

Oi!

Então a idéia da Anita realmente me agrada.
